Hiwa-i-te-rangi
Hiwa-i-te-Rangi (Celaeno) is a female star and the youngest child of Matariki. She is the star Maori associate with wish, hopes, aspirations and desires. She is also associated with the promise of a prosperous season.
Hiwa-i-te-rangi is conceptualised at this site as the ball of a massive poi. Here a large toka (boulder) is the pou and centre of attention. To whanau (families), this toka has always been there and always will be. It is a place to come to, to spend time, to gaze out and around to wahi tupuna (ancestral places) near and far. In situ rock faces around the area are embellished with designs to intuitively prompt creative, free thinking and elicit a sense of discovery. Wa Hurihuri sits adjacent to the toka and is a space, particularly for kaumatua (elders), to also sit and contemplate. This is a place that is accessible for all to invoke their innermost wishes and aspirations.
