Matariki
Matariki (Alcyone) is the mother and conductor of the celestial family known as Te Kahui o Matariki. She, like all mothers, nurtures her children in the cluster. She is the star Maori associate with well-being, good fortune, and health.
Matariki is conceptualised at this site through a matriarchal head-dress comprised of Matariki’s formidable celestial children surrounding the mother star. Her children’s special qualities and prowess are testimony to the nurturing force of unconditional aroha (love) and the maternal spirit. This pou is an expression of the importance of intergenerational bonds that reinforce an individual’s moral, ethical, and spiritual compass throughout their lives. The pou pays homage to the mother in all cultures across the globe, and also draws our attention to the island of Matariki that you can see from this site, that protects and shelters this peaceful bay.
